San Carlos, CA (September 19, 2011) – As part of its ongoing Carry License Compliance and Sunshine Initiative, the Calguns Foundation (CGF) announced that it has further redacted and published firearm carry license applications received from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The publication of these approved “good cause statements” comes as a final chapter in its successful lawsuit against Ventura County and its then sheriff, Bob Brooks. The decision in CGF v. Ventura was released in July. Redacted application information is available to the public immediately at http://calgunsfoundation.org/resources/downloads/category/17-2011audit.html.
Ventura County residents can now review exactly those reasons current Sheriff Geoff Dean considers to be acceptable for obtaining a carry license.
As part of the completion of this case, CGF collaborated with Ventura County to reduce the costs incurred by the county while updating the requested time period to incorporate all carry license applications submitted from the year prior to Sheriff Brooks’ leaving office up to July, 2011 under current Sheriff Dean’s administration. Concurrently, CGF mailed requests for public records to California’s 57 other sheriffs to begin updating each county’s policies and good cause data.
“Once the Court properly interpreted the Public Records Act, Ventura has been a pleasure to work with,” said Gene Hoffman, Chairman of the Calguns Foundation. “We believe that residents of Ventura County will now have much better access to the license they need to exercise their right to bear arms and we have reason to believe that the application process will improve as well.”
“We expect this case to serve as a wake-up call to the few sheriffs and counties who decided to try to ignore or resist the release of these important documents during our last request,” added Brandon Combs, a director of CGF and leader of the Initiative. “We require nothing less than full compliance with the law from California’s sheriffs, and expect the successful completion of this case - and Ventura’s paying CGF’s legal fees - to make the decision to do the right thing that much easier for them.”
